Australian Used-Car Risk Index by State — 2026

National VIN Check combined write-off rates, finance owing and vehicle theft into a single index ranking where a used-car purchase carries the most hidden risk. Here's how the states compare — and why it matters when you relocate.

Used-Car Risk Isn't the Same in Every State

When you relocate interstate, almost everything resets — the property market, the commute, and, if you're buying a car, the odds of that car hiding a problem. New research from National VIN Check quantifies exactly that, combining write-off rates, finance-owing rates and vehicle theft into a single composite risk index scored from 0 to 100.

The index is built from 9,213 vehicle checks run between January and July 2026, and it ranks where buying a used car privately carries the most hidden risk.

The Risk Index by State

Each state is scored relative to the highest-risk state (NSW = 100):

  • New South Wales — 100 (write-off 24%, finance owing 19%)
  • Victoria — 91 (write-off 22%, finance owing 18%)
  • Queensland — 82 (write-off 19.5%, finance owing 17%, highest theft index)
  • Western Australia — 66 (write-off 16%, finance owing 15%)
  • South Australia — 60 (write-off 15%, finance owing 13%)
  • Northern Territory — 44 (write-off 4%, finance owing 12%, elevated theft)
  • Tasmania — 38 (write-off 8%, finance owing 11%)
  • ACT — 25 (write-off 4%, finance owing 16%, lowest overall)

Key Takeaways

National VIN Check highlights a few patterns worth knowing before you buy:

  • NSW tops the index, driven by the country's highest write-off and finance-owing rates.
  • Victoria and Queensland round out the top three — Queensland is lifted by the nation's highest vehicle-theft index.
  • The ACT is the lowest-risk jurisdiction, with the lowest write-off and theft rates.
  • Regional factors matter: the NT ranks mid-table largely because of elevated theft, despite a low write-off rate.

Check the Car, Not Just the State Average

A state ranking is a useful backdrop, but it can't tell you about the individual car in front of you. Wherever you're buying, a PPSR and VIN check reveals that specific vehicle's finance, write-off and stolen history before you commit. Pair that discipline with a data-driven suburb choice: use Compare My Suburb to rank suburbs on public-transport access so that in a higher-risk market, you're not forced to rush a used-car purchase just to get around.
